Simple Simon
Simple Simon was designed specifically for an evening adult education course at the Cape Cod Regional Vocational/Technical High School. It features a hybrid blend of plywood construction techniques and can be built by the novice boat builder in less than 24 man-hours.
There are no curves to layout or cut on the side panels. The curves in the hull are developed when the panels are bent into position. The overall length is 7'7" with a molded beam of 3'9". Three sheets of plywood are required: 1/4" (side panels), 3/8" (bottom panel), 3/4" (transom, thwarts, main frame, breasthook, and quarter knees). Two KD 2x4x8 building studs complete the inventory of wood required to build this boat. Hardware requirements are one box (100 ct.) of #8 x 3/4" ss flat-head screws, one box (100 ct.) of #8 x 1-1/2" ss flat-head screws, and one 5/16" x 4" ss eyebolt (for towing eye). The remaining materials required to build this boat are: one quart of MAS epoxy resin, one pint MAS hardener, one quart MAS wood flour, ten yards of 3" wide 9 oz. fiberglass tape, and one pair oarlocks with horns.
6.5 to 7' oars are recommended for this little boat.
